What to Expect When Taking Your Pet To A Grooming Salon

As a new pet owner, the process of caring for your newfound furry friend can get overwhelming. From vet check-ups to grooming sessions, there is so much to do and so little time. For first time pet owners, we have compiled a to-know list before bringing your pet to a professional groomer.

Choosing a groomer

They may appear young, but rest assured that most local pet groomers have undergone training at local schools and apprenticeships under the guidance of more experienced groomers. For instance, the Singapore Kennel Club provides training and certification for dog grooming and pet safety. If you are tempted to opt for cheap pet grooming in Singapore, before handing over your pet, be sure to review the groomer’s certification.

Price points

The price of pet grooming will vary according to the pet, the location and the groomer one opts for. For instance, the average cost of grooming medium sized dogs ranges from $70 to $100. However, the final cost depends on the dog’s coat and style of cut. Giant dog breeds such as Great Danes will come at a higher, and it is not uncommon to find groomers charging an excess of $200. As cats are slightly more difficult to groom, do expect a grooming fee of $100 to $150.

If travelling with your pet is an issue, you may opt for mobile pet grooming services. However, do note that these groomers will come at a higher price, considering the convenience and undivided attention that your companion will receive.

Types of services

Most pet grooming salons separate their grooming services into two categories: basic grooming and a full groom. Basic grooming entails basic nail clipping, cleaning of the ears, paw pad shaving, removing of undercoat, bathing, drying and brushing. A full groom on the other hand, consists of everything included in basic grooming and additional services such as styling. The best pet grooming services will often go the extra mile to perform a basic health check on your pet’s gums, check for any injuries and advise you accordingly. Many pet grooming salons today also offer a variety of additional services such as flea treatment, nail painting, untangling of fur and more.

Pet grooming isn’t just about having your pet look its best. Aside from keeping its fur in tip-top condition, grooming sessions will also allow professional groomers to spot tell-tale signs of skin-related diseases.
