Singapore, 23 August 2019 – Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF) will be holding its third Woof-a-thon on 2ndNovember 2019 at Oasis Terraces (Community Plaza @ Level 1) in Punggol. Organised every two years, the event aims to encourage walking for heart health, as well as raise awareness on the cardiovascular benefits that pet ownership can bring. Guest of Honour Mr Teo Ser Luck, Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Former Minister of State, will be gracing the event.
Participants and their furry friends can look forward to a wide range of activities – including a basic health check for dogs (from 3-5pm) that entails checks for geriatric problems like dental and cardiac disease, CPR demonstrations for both hoomans and doggos, and a dog fashion contest named Furtastic Fashionista Contest. Its signature event, the 2.5km Buddy Walk segment, is back by popular demand! It aims to have over 500 canine participants this year, in celebration of SHF’s 50th Anniversary next year. The Buddy Walk registration fee for dog participants is at $15 each (free for humans), which includes a Certificate of Pawticipation, a medal and a goodie bag. Admission to the Woof-a-thon event itself, is free.
Many are still unaware that cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke combined) is the number one killer in Singapore. However, this disease is largely preventable and walking is a low-impact exercise that has many cardiovascular benefits. Studies have shown that dog owners engage in more walking and physical activity than non-dog owners, and are 54% more likely to get the recommended level of physical activity. Pet owners above the age of 65 also make 30% fewer visits to their doctors than those without pets. SHF continues to promote heart health, by encouraging Singaporeans to have a more active lifestyle to prevent and reduce the premature onset of disability and death due to cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
Nap time is over, so hurry and put your best paws forward! Participants can register their BFFs (best furry friends) at https://www.myheart.org.sg/woof-a-thon-2019.
