7 Enchanting Pets From the Harry Potter World You Wish You Had

7 Enchanting Pets From the Harry Potter World You Wish You Had

J.K. Rowling’s world of Harry Potter introduced an array of strange and mystical creatures to the imaginations of animal lovers everywhere, but none were as enchanting and true to life as it’s principal characters’ pets. Here are 7 of the most enchanting creatures to have graced us both in pixel and in print from the Harry Potter series.

Neville Longbottom and Trevor the Toad

Despite his absent-mindedness and habit of losing his pet the whole time he was in school, Neville Longbottom’s gift in commemoration of his acceptance to Hogwarts came in the form of a lovely, throaty toad by the name of Trevor. While Trevor and toads (in general) aren’t necessarily magical, this bizarre scene could have made Trevor the Beyoncé of his time.

Ron Weasley and Scabbers the Rat; and Ron and Pigwidgeon the Owl

The only character to have found out that his pet was in fact a human animagus, Ron’s hand-me-down rat, Scabbers, had been living with the Weasley family for years before being revealed to be the infamous Peter Pettigrew. Although seen as boring and with little value, Ron was partial to Scabbers as only pet owners would understand. After the revelation of Scabbers true identity, Ron replaced his pet rat with a small, annoying and loud owl named Pigwidgeon.

Hermione Granger and Crookshanks the Cat

Never has the union of feminism and feline brought as much relatable joy than the relationship between Hermione and her beloved ball of fur, Crookshanks. Although Crookshanks’ magical prowess is slightly questionable, the half-cat half-Kneazle reflects its owner’s intellect by sniffing out Peter Pettigrew’s Animagus disguise as Ron’s rat, Scabbers.

Hagrid and his love for all fantastic beasts

The love between man and his dog doesn’t stop even when there are plenty of living mythical creatures and mystical beings to befriend in the backyard of his very own home. From Thestrals to Hippogriffs, Hagrid has an abundance of love to share with animals and creatures, both fantastical and otherwise. Yet, one of his personal favourites, Fang, is featured in both film and print throughout the Harry Potter series. Although large and intimidating in demeanour, Fang is like most beloved dogs — soft and fluffy on the inside!

Harry Potter and Hedwig the Snowy Owl

Despite being obligate carnivores, cats can sometimes get cravings for greens. Once you notice your cat chomping on your home plants, try feeding it small portions of veggies, like steamed broccoli. This can satisfy their desire and clear up digestive troubles while at the same time decreasing their penchant for munching on (potentially toxic) house plants.

Nothing exemplifies true loyalty and love than an owl that (spoiler alert!) sacrifices her life to Voldemort’s followers to protect her owner. The relationship between Harry Potter and his snowy pet owl, Hedwig, is without a doubt, an envy of many pet owners.

Voldemort and Nagini the Snake

Those who suffer from Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) might want to skip this mention entirely. If we’re being honest, Nagini only made this list because we simply can’t ignore her. While each snake in the Harry Potter world may not be magical, Nagini’s otherworldly prowess is unquestionable. The enchanted snake is a horcrux (a vessel for part of Voldemort’s evil soul) and also briefly sustains Voldemort using her venom, which acts as an elixir that heals and repairs his body whenever he’s in a weakened state.

Dumbledore and Fawkes the Phoenix

Continuing the grand tradition of magical animals in Harry Potter, Fawkes the Phoenix came with his own set of magic tricks. The only rightful partner and pet to the esteemed Dumbledore, this rare, faithful creature teleports in style (through bursts of flames), bears tears of healing and is capable of regeneration (thus being immortal) — truly mirroring Dumbledore’s majestic status and magical prowess as Headmaster of Hogwarts.
